Howard’s a big hit in New Zealand

By Barry Knott in Rugby

FORMER Wellington rugby player Howard Pierce, 73, is still in a daze over his dream trip to New Zealand to watch the British Lions, writes Barry Knott.

Howard recounts that in 1978-79 he was a member of a Wellington team which played Wasps 2nds away and in the clubhouse afterwards he was handed a lucky charm.

“The charm was given to me by a kiwi, a hooker, who said: ‘One day this will bring you to New Zealand,” he said.

“I have carried this charm around with me since then and took it on the Lions tour. We were invited to Poneke Rugby Club one evening and I was invited to meet the president John Jackson.

“I showed him my lucky charm and told him it would one-day bring me to his country.”

“The president made me an honorary member of his club for the day. He gave me a Poneke shirt and scarf and I handed him the tie I wore when I played against Wasps. It was all very emotional.”
