Wellington alleyway named Cubitt’s Place

By Mark Pritchett in Local People

THE alleyway between High Street and Clifford Terrace in Wellington, between Mary Jenkins greengrocers and Chandni Chowk, has been given a name and, so far, one name plate (pictured) at the Clifford Terrace end.

The second name plate, at the High Street end, is on order.

In 2007 the site of the old Cubitt & Drake yard, accessed via the alley, was developed into a row of town houses which the developer named, appropriately, Cubitt’s Place. This is confirmed by the carving on the front of the building.

This leads to the unusual situation of the thoroughfare being named after the building. Usually it is the other way round.
