WELLINGTON Ladies played in the County Saturday League against North Petherton. The rain stayed away and the spectators were treated to a very good match with some excellent bowling from both sides with Petherton just squeezing home.
Debbie Lane, Shirley Samuel and skip Ann Cowling started well but North Petherton got into their stride and moved ahead to win it 21 – 7.
On the next rink it was a very different story. Pauline Wadham, June Anderson and skip Gill Groves came through strongly to win it comfortably by 24 shots to 11.
On the final rink it was very close. Thelma Helps, Marguerite Nichols and skip Lynda Manning were 17 – 16 up with one to play but North Petherton took a 4 to win 20-17.
Although Wellington only won on one rink they lost overall by only four shots, 48 - 52. Regardless of the scores the game of bowls was definitely the winner.
Meanwhile, four teams from Porlock arrived at Wellington Bowling Club intent on giving their best in the Mixed Open Triples.
The teams were fairly level to start with on the first rink, but Diana Dagg, Angie Moore and skip Peter White picked up the pace and won comfortably, 21 – 8.
Geoff Stamp, Pete Nichols, and skip Alan May fought hard but lost in the end by one shot, 18 – 17.
There was a tight battle on rink 3. Wendy Scott, Ron Elston and skip Darren Sparks were level on 4 shots each after 6 ends but the Wellington side pinched it after a tight battle, 18 – 13.
June Anderson, Marguerite Nichols and skip Ian Hollingsworth sealed Porlock's fate overall with a fine win by 22 shots to 7.
The overall score was Wellington 78, Porlock 46. A friendly yet competitive game was enjoyed by everyone.
