Legion marks anniversary
THE Royal British Legion women’s section has celebrated 75 years in Wellington at The Court in the town.
Young wives and sweethearts came together in the midst of the Second World War to support each other through harrowing times.
Two members of the women’s section are still alive – Nancy Grinter, who is now president, and Thelma Grabham.
Member Madge Covey said at the event: “A couple of years ago the branch nearly closed but with sheer determination we were able to keep the flag flying in Wellington.
“Now we are here with our new standard bearer Emma Rood and 11 members raising money for the Royal British Legion.
“We are still continuing as we all first began supporting each other and today’s service personnel.”
John Elder gave a brief reading and a said a prayer, Michael Rose gave the exhortation and Wellington Mayor Gary James made a speech.
Madge Covey would like to thank The Court for hosting the event.
