Everyone’s ideal Christmas is different but expectations are high whatever the plans are. We all want there to be harmony between family members, presents we love and food we enjoy, but these things don’t always happen.
Some of us are organisers, some of us will help if we’re asked and some of us just like to watch what others are doing. Christmas can put a strain on all of these groups.
The organisers may have to juggle work, family responsibilities and Christmas shopping, with the accompanying stress. This results in the helpers feeling got at when they are told off for not doing things ‘properly’, and both these groups get angry with the watchers for not pulling their weight. The watchers, in turn, can’t see what the fuss is about, and feel resentful at being told off for not helping.
As well, all of us may be missing the loved ones we can’t be with.
So, it’s important to take time out to give yourself time to rest, relax and unwind from the pressure.
Try giving yourself a little ‘TLC.’ TLC stands for ‘Textures, Lines, Colours’. Use your eyes to notice all the TLCs around you, just for a few minutes. This should make you feel calm, and the best thing is that you can do it anywhere and at any time, and no one will notice, except you. Being kind to yourself is the best present you can give your dear self, so try it this Christmas and throughout the year.
Among all the chocolate and mince pies, try not to forget eating for good mental health. It’s not about going without the fun stuff, it’s about having the essentials too.
To combat stress, for example, our bodies need Vitamins C, B1, B5, so include as many of these foods as possible:
Fruit - citrus, strawberries, melon.
Salad items - peppers, watercress, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, avocado.
Vegetables - cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, squash, courgette, asparagus, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, alfalfa.
Protein - lentils, eggs, beans.
If you can find room for kefir and other probiotic foods too, that’s even better, as well as plenty of water so you’re fully hydrated.
And, if things are less than ‘perfect,’ and you’re feeling frayed, imagine yourself to be somewhere you like, or think of something you’re looking forward to, and smile. Odd though it sounds, a happy thought, and the smile that brings, will make you feel better and help to keep you going.
