WELLINGTON’S football manager Tim Legg has stressed the need for his side to make more of their scoring chances when they play at home to Ilfracombe Town on Bank Holiday Monday (1pm).

“The time to start worrying is when you don’t create chances but we’re missing too many of them at the moment,” said Legg whose team deserved at least a draw against Saltash United last weekend, instead of losing 2-1 at home.

“We created a lot of opportunities to get a second goal which would have won us the game,” said Legg. “However, there were still lots of positives to take from the match and if we continue to focus on these then I’m sure results will start going our way. Ilfracombe have made a fantastic start to the season after coming up from the first division and will provide another tough test. Hopefully, this time it will be us that will put away our chances and get the three points.”

Wellington have hovered around the lower section of the premier division for most of this season and still have games in hand on teams around them. They are 14th and Legg would like them to be in a mid-table position.

One of his problems has been in trying to field a settled side. He has had to make constant changes in recent weeks which does not help the flow of the side.

Ilfracombe go into the game fourth in the table but dropped two points in a 1-1 away draw against lowly Ashton & Backwell United last weekend. They are 12 points behind leaders Tavistock but have two matches in hand.

Wellington Reserves’ fine form in the first division of the Devon and Exeter League - they’re third in the table - is being halted by an enforced three week break.

They won 4-1 at Newtown last weekend and manager Steve Trevelyan said: “Obviously we didn’t want to stop playing because we’re playing so well. The last thing you want to do is stop playing.”

The Reserves are not back in action until they play at home to Sandford at the Playing Field on Saturday, January 8.
