ROCK band Benny & the Teds have handed over a cheque for £1,000 to cancer charity SURE after a sell-out gig at Wellington Arts Centre.
The sixties, seventies and eighties covers band performed for 28 years until 2013 and reunited for one night only for the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment gig. They performed many of their old favourites during a full evening of entertainment ably supported by Kevin Caughlin and friends, collectively known on the night as ‘Comfort Period’.
Benny & The Teds’ two-and-a-half hour set was enjoyed by everyone at the venue – as was the hot buffet served by Colin Marshall and his team. Rob Spurway, assisted by Rupert Sells, expertly managed sound and lighting, and the Critics Club ran a fully stocked bar.
Many local businesses gave vouchers and goods for the grand draw, which contributed to the evening’s overall profit. Benny & The Teds would like to thank everyone who gave prizes for the draw and especially Odette’s Tearoom for acting as the box office. The evening was devised to raise money for SURE, based at the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Benny & the Teds handed over a cheque for £1,000 to SURE chairman Paul Alway at a short presentation ceremony at the Beacon Centre.
Band member Geoff Cross, on behalf of the band, said: “We were extremely pleased with the amount raised and delighted to be able to present it to such a worthwhile cause. Cancer and cancer treatment is very close to our heart.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported the evening in all sorts of ways. This was a one-off reunion of Benny & the Teds which was a really fun project after four years in retirement – and, who knows, never say never!”
