BMX riders have been digging in to provide a track for youngsters in Wellington by the start of the school summer holidays.
The site between Wellington Park and the town sports centre had been a track more than a decade ago but was limited without the jumps and ramps to keep riders interested.
In recent years the site became overgrown but it is now being cleared with the help of a digger leant by Eagle Plant Hire, and ramps made of compacted earth created.
Two lines are being made – one for advanced cyclists and the other for amateurs, so the track is accessible to everyone who wants to use it.
The volunteers, who used the previous track themselves as youngsters, hope to stage an open day when the track is finished attended by professional BMX riders.
Wellington town and county councillor Andrew Govier, who has worked with the volunteers on the project, said: “I was really impressed with the hard work they put in. They are obviously passionate about the project and they have transformed the area. Some work is still needed to complete the track but it should be ready for the school holidays.”
He added: “I was very grateful to Tom Richards from Eagle Plant in Taunton who loaned the plant to the project free of charge. Without this equipment the project wouldn’t have been possible and it is great that a local company was able to lend its support.
“I was also grateful to Darren Hill and Jonathan Stevens from Somerset West and Taunton Council for their positive support.”
