BONFIRE night at Wiveliscombe War Memorial Recreation Ground produced a spectacular fireworks display.
Hundreds of people went to watch and support the War Memorial and local sports clubs on a dry, clear evening. Volunteers from the Fire Service somehow improved last year’s brilliant display.
The rugby club offered burgers, hot dogs and chips, tea and coffee from the kitchen, stalls of cakes from the tennis club, sweets
from the swimming pool, glowing rings and bangles from the School PTA.
Local businesses gave more than £400 of raffle prizes, including a free MOT from Country Cars & Vans and meals at the Bear and White Hart. Free tickets were issued to all adult paying entrants and further tickets were sold during the event.
Chris Hendy, chairman of the War Memorial management committee, said: “Last year was brilliant, this year was even better. A big thank you to all who helped on the evening, the volunteers who work tirelessly setting up, running stalls, kitchen, organising the building and supervising of the bonfire etc and clearing up after the event.
“The fact so many people used the designated sparkler area meant not too many to pick up because most people used the bins.
“Thanks also go to the local clubs and businesses which supported us this year. Last year the ground’s annual fundraiser made a profit of about £1,800 and indications this year are that figure will be surpassed.”
