A BUILDER has been told to demolish two new mews homes behind the old Ship Inn in Mantle Street, Wellington.

Wellington town councillors were told at their monthly meeting on Monday that Taunton Deane Borough Council had authorised the enforcement notice for the homes to be pulled down.

Roger Bird has turned the pub into two houses and knocked down a two-storey function room and single-storey skittle alley to build the houses.

But a decision has been taken that the two properties – in a row of three – unacceptably ‘overlooked a neighbour’s garden’.

Mr Bird had made two retrospective planning applications for the three properties to keep them as they had been built but with obscured glazing installed in first floor windows.

He was unavailable for comment on the matter yesterday but did say: “Lots of things are going on at the moment. I will be in a position to make comment at some stage.”
