WELLINGTON is in serious danger of being left without a post office in the centre of the town.

The One Stop in High Street, also home for the main post office in Wellington, is set to close in August.

So far no-one has come forward to take over the lease of the building and a Post Office spokesperson said yesterday: “The Postmaster for Wellington Post Office has resigned and the Post Office and One Stop store are currently due to close in mid-August.

“We are committed to providing a Post Office in the area. We are looking at ways to provide Post Office services.

“Any retailer interested in incorporating a Post Office in their premises should email [email protected] or phone 0845 2668790.”

The Mayor of Wellington Gary James is ‘very concerned’ that if the closure goes ahead that it is another big inconvenience to the Wellington public.

He added: “The Post Office has always been the hub of drawing pensions, parcel collection and more recently taking on the roll of our closed banks. I hope that the Post Office Counters manages to find a suitable solution which will enable a post office in our town to continue.”

Town and county councillor Andrew Govier said: “It is essential that we have access to post office services in the town centre.

“Although the facility at Rockwell Green is an excellent one, there are many Wellington residents, particularly the elderly and those who don’t have access to cars, who need to be able to walk to a local office.

“I believe that the PO urgently needs to review its plans and have a major rethink on this. There must be alternative premises that could be used. With the loss of so many local banks there is an even greater reliance on the services provided by the post office for paying in cheques and drawing out cash.”
