TOWN councillors have set up a small working group to try to break the deadlock over stalled plans for re-opening a Post Office in Wellington.
Led by Cllr Mike McGuffie, the group will press the Post Office to be more ‘flexible’ with its requirements for any new franchise.
The issue was discussed by councillors in a confidential session at the latest town council meeting after Cllr McGuffie was concerned to read in the WWN that talks had broken down between the Post Office and a local businessman.
Cllr McGuffie said: “We recognise the importance of having a Post Office in Wellington and how much local people want to see it re-opened as soon as possible.
“So we are looking at all the possible ways forward, some of which will have to remain confidential for the moment because they are commercially sensitive.
“But we do feel the Post Office needs to reconsider its approach in the light of experience as it has been unable to find any takers on the terms it is offering currently.
“We are greatly concerned that after four months the Post Office seems no nearer to a solution than it was when the One Stop premises closed in August.
“However, we do have some positive ideas to help and we will as a working group be trying to take them forward as speedily as possible.”
