TALKS concerning the re-opening of a post office in Wellington have broken down.

The WWN can reveal that no progress has been made since the post office in High Street closed early in August.

A local businessman tried to negotiate with the post office with the aim of re-opening the facility in the town but he said he would be ‘working for nothing’ with no profit in it.

He wanted to move into the old NatWest building in Fore Street bought by Chelston-based company Hawkings Property and is in the process of being refurbished.

The firm’s joint owner Jason Hawkings said: “It’s a pity about the post office but we want to get the right tenant in place. We want a long-term tenant.”

The company also bought the old HSBC building on the corner of Fore Street and South Street now occupied on a long-term basis by solicitors AmicusLaw. The premises has flats above.

A third bank which closed in Fore Street, Barclays, has been for sale with South Street estate agent Webbers at a guide price of £225,000.

Webbers manager Roger Slattery said: “The sale has been agreed on the old Barclays building.”
