A LOCAL cafe owner and town councillor has called for speed bumps to be installed in Mantle Street, Wellington.
It follows an incident in the street outside the Wellesley Theatre when a white van heading towards the town collided with a Ford Focus parked in the street.
The Focus was pushed back to such an extent that it crunched the front of a red Audi parked behind it. The Audi, in turn, was pushed back into a small van.
Nancy Powell-Brace, who runs Odette’s Tearoom in Wellington’s High Street, said: “My Citroen C1 was written off in exactly the same place two years ago. There is no monitoring of speed in Mantle Street. I came home to find my car had been shunted right off the road across the pavement. How many times does this have to happen before speed bumps are placed on Mantle Street?”
The police said: “The driver of the van who was making deliveries in the area suffered minor injuries, having collided with a legally parked car.
“He did not require hospital treatment. The driver was reported for the consideration of prosecution for driving without due care and attention.”
