WELLINGTON Carnival Committee held a presentation afternoon on Sunday to inform the people of the town what is involved in putting on the largest event in the town and to try and get some support to keep this tradition going.
Sadly, the presentation was attended by only six people interested in getting involved with the event. However the Football club was full with many local clubs, charities, and schools collecting a donation for assisting with last year’s events by collecting, selling light up toys or performing at the 2018 street fair and carnival.
Louise Brierley, secretary for the committee, said: “We are really pleased to announce that we are able to donate £3500 to all the fantastic organisations that have helped us put on two major events for our town.
“The committee should be really proud of what they have achieved”
Members of the current committee chose the WHERE centre and Finley’s Wishes & Dreams to receive a £500 donation each.
Finley’s mum Louise Jackson said they were fundraising to purchase Finley an EYECAN, a computer that Finley will be able to use to communicate using his eyes, as he is unable to talk or use his hands and arms.
A donation of £250 was also made to Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance, which was the choice of Wellington Carnival’s Father Christmas.
Other groups who attended the presentation to receive a donation included Beech Grove School, Somerset Red Arrow Majorettes, Mrs Madge Covey, Wellington Scouts, Wellington Monument - National Trust, Wivey Wind Band, High Park Music Group, Wellington Brownies, West Buckland PCC, First Responders, Reminiscence Learning and Wellington Majorettes.
Dave Rylatt, chairman, said: “Wellington Carnival cannot continue unless we find enough members to allow for a safe, profitable and incident free event to take place. We have committed to putting on this year’s Street Fair on Sunday, June 2, as this event helps to pay for some of the costs involved with staging the carnival in September.
“Anyone wishing to perform in the arena or book a stall should get in contact as soon as possible as spaces are limited.
“The AGM is due to take place on Sunday, March 17, at Wellington Football Club (2p.m.).
“Anyone interested in keeping this historic event alive in our town, MUST ATTEND.”
