CARNIVAL-GOERS in Wellington and around Somerset have been thanked for backing a carnival merchandise scheme which has raised about £3,000 for schools, clubs and charities.

Spectators were encouraged to buy carnival toys and balloons from official sellers rather than street pedlars, the latter often from outside the area.

The success of the scheme in its first trial year exceeded the expectations of the South Somerset Federation of Carnivals, made up of the Wellington, Ilminster, Chard and Taunton events.

The scheme will run again next year and it is hoped to raise funds for more illuminated signage, extra lighting and possibly a PA system.

In a statement the Federation said: “We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who supported us in our joint town venture this year.

“It is worth noting that none of the money would have been possible if the members of the public had bought their toys and balloons from unofficial sellers, so we are grateful to those who have bought from us.

“The unofficial street pedlars don’t give any of their profits back to the carnival collections.

“It is also worth remembering that our official sellers aren’t allowed to use trolleys, as this invalidates our license, hence they are accompanied by the van, so anything bought from a pedlar with a trolley does not go towards the carnival purse.

“It has been a massive learning curve for us and we have highlighted what has worked well, and also not so well, so that we can build on this success next year.

“We couldn’t have done it without the help of the local businesses, volunteers and organisations that worked tirelessly at each of the carnivals.”
