WELLINGTON Carnival will take place next September provided there is sufficient support from local people, writes Barry Knott.
That’s the opinion of the Carnival’s former chairman Sharon Collins who stepped down just before the pandemic about two years ago.
The Wellington Carnival (Somerset) Ltd will be holding its annual meeting at the Cottage Inn, Wellington, on December 7 (7.30pm). Paul Goodyer will chair the meeting while Sharon Collins will attend in her role as treasurer.
“It’s quite simple. If the people of Wellington want a carnival next year they must attend the annual meeting at the Cottage,” she said yesterday. “If they don’t there will be no carnival.
“However, if they show their support, the annual street fair will take place on Sunday, June 5. This will be held to provide the cash to stage the carnival.
“As we see it, the people of Wellington must come out to show their support. They cannot expect Paul and I to do everything ourselves. It means people must come forward at the annual meeting, volunteer and help to put the event on.
“I think people’s views on how they enjoy life has changed since the pandemic. I think people have missed the carnival in Wellington.
“We have also appreciated the help we’ve been promised by the Cottage Inn.”
Wellington Carnival is part of the South Somerset Federation which also includes Ilminster, Chard and Taunton.
It traditionally takes place in September but was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021. It is one of the biggest events held in the town over the year and attracts thousands, many from outside the town.
