POLICE officers received a 999 emergency call in Wellington – only to discover that the number had been accidentally dialled by a child playing with a phone.

PC Jo Jeffery told members of Wellington Town Council that police often received accidental 999 calls – which are different to hoax calls.

“It has been known for a child to play with a phone and randomly dial 999,” she said.

The incident involving the child happened on June 1.
