CHILDREN at St John’s Primary School in Wellington have celebrated their love of books despite the school being closed on World Book Day because of snow.

Pupils dressed as characters from their favourite books the following week and started the day with a celebration assembly when the winners of a Reading Challenge were each awarded a £5 book token and bookmark.

Later, the children had the opportunity to hear an adult reading the book of their choice. A wide variety of books, many with a snowy theme, were shared, including stories about snow dragons, an ice bear and a monster snowman. Other books included a Cat in a Hat and A Bad Dad!

Each pupil was given a £1 World Book Day voucher to spend and a sticker to wear.

A school spokesperson said: “We know that reading is important all year round, but it’s great to have one day a year when we can really focus on new authors, be introduced to books we have never seen before and have fun.”
