YEAR 9 students at Court Fields school in Wellington have won an innovation award in the EDT’s Go4SET STEM competition.

The Go4SET project is typically ten weeks and offers young people in Years 8/9 the opportunity to develop skills, inform subject choice and change perceptions about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, raising awareness of how studying these subjects can lead to a rewarding career.

The students had to design a new eco-friendly factory that uses new, sustainable and environmentally friendly ways to create the energy it needs to run.

Court Fields students designed a factory that made clothes from recycling old clothes with the energy required for making the clothes coming from wind power.

The students attended a graduation day where the judges recognised the group’s original design with the award for innovation.

In preparation for graduation day students had to produce a report explaining their project, a model of their factory and a presentation to explain the factory to the judges.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Throughout the project the students worked incredibly hard and we are all very proud of their achievements.”
