SUPERMARKET check-out operator Pauline Hayes had an emotional weekend when she had her head shaved for a good cause – and saw her son, who was making a surprise visit from Australia.
Pauline, who works at the Co-op in Fore Street, Wellington, had her hair cut at the store with co-worker Tim Perrin in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Brave the Shave event also included face painting by Kelly Lowry, who lost half a leg to bone cancer, a cake sale and collecting pots. Tamsin Fuller from Manny’s barber shop in Cornhill carried out the head shave – and more than £1,000 has been raised.
Later in the day Pauline went to The Skylark at Chelston for a meal and was shocked to be met by her son Daryl, 22, who was visiting from Sydney in Australia. Pauline had not seen Daryl, who is working as a painter and decorator, for 18 months.
Pauline said: “It was huge surprise to see him – and very emotional. I had spoken to him the night before and he was grumbling about having to go to work the next day. It turned out he was phoning from Dubai Airport and was on his way to England. He is loving life in Australia.”
Anyone who wants to add to Pauline’s and Tim’s fundraising can contribute through Macmillan Cancer Support’s Facebook page and searching for their names or directly at the Co-op.
