COPIES of the WWN spotlighting anti-social behaviour in Wellington were put before police chief Sue Mountstevens when she held a public drop-in surgery in The Iron Duke on Monday afternoon.
The Avon and Somerset police and crime commissioner invited members of the public to tell her their concerns about crime in the town – and many did.
Police and community support officers also attended the event and were available to answer questions.
As well as the public, county, district and town councillors attended, including the Mayor of Wellington, Gary James.
“Wellington is still a great place to live but there are a few problems which I was assured will be dealt with,” he said afterwards. “The police are under pressure because of budget cuts. It was great people turned up in their numbers to hear what she had to say. Wellington is a safe place to live and is a good town.”
County councillor John Thorne said the commissioner, who has been in the job for more than five years, had promised not to cut the neighbourhood beat team and this had been ring-fenced for another two years. She said at one stage she thought she might have to make cuts had an increase in this year’s precept not been allowed.
