THE local branch of the award-winning charity CAP (Christians Against Poverty) is taking on extra staff to help with the increase in numbers of people struggling with debt-related issues in Taunton Deane and West Somerset.

The centre, based at Taunton Vineyard Church, has seen a marked increase in the number of people seeking appointments for help with out-of-control debts and has been bolstered by the arrival of Nick Webb as a debt coach.

Nick worked at the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton for more than 38 years and recently retired as a senior manager.

Centre manager Jon Carrington said, “We’re delighted to welcome Nick onto the team. It’s great news for our local community – we’ll have many more appointments available each week and will be able to see and help many more people, much more quickly.”

The centre, which opened in 2015, has seen a steady growth in the number of people seeking help as word has spread of CAP’s unique, in-depth, caring and face-to-face help.

Typically, most clients get in touch after personal recommendation while others are referred by family centres, housing associations and council offices.

The clients’ creditors are contacted by CAP, a workable budget is set for the household and the charity continues to give support and encouragement until each person is debt-free.

Jon added: “The most common cause of debt is persistent low income, followed by a change in circumstance, for example, job loss, relationship breakdown, accident or illness in the family.”
