A WOMAN candidate in the forthcoming Somerset West and Taunton Council elections has apologised after her dogs killed two ducklings at the Basins in Wellington towards the end of last week.

Nancy Powell-Brace was talking on her mobile phone while her two dogs attacked the ducklings in front of horrified onlookers.

The embarrassed Lib-Dem candidate was quick to respond to the incident, and used social media to say: “I do hold my hands up and I am thoroughly ashamed of the behaviour of my dogs and my part in this afternoon.

“I have, and remain extremely sorry and distressed by the event. I would say that I am not, in general, an irresponsible dog owner. I take great care of my animals and do my very best to ensure their good behaviour.

“On this occasion a set of circumstances led to this very sad event and I am not the sort of person to hide away from my responsibilities. I am sure there will be those who will continue to berate me and my dogs that cannot be avoided in a world of Facebook and social media, but I am sorry, desperately so. It doesn’t help the situation, I know, but I don’t want people thinking I am not prepared to admit my mistake and hide away.

“I hope there will be some who will try to understand that this was a one-off. My dogs are not vicious and I do my best to keep them under control.”Nancy is co-owner of Odette's tea room in High Street, Wellington, and has supported the Wellington Monument restoration project by raising sponsorship funds with a walk from London to the monument. She is also active within Wellington Arts Association and has been behind a Christmas show whose proceeds last year paid for Christmas trees for town shops.
