People in Somerset and Devon are being warned about rogue doorstep traders following a surge in complaints.
Devon and Somerset Trading Standards says 87 complaints were made about rogue traders in 2015 with residents losing a total of £101,000.
Six complaints were made in March this year and in February victims lost an estimated £3,000.
Longer daylight hours often coincide with an increase in complaints and now trading standards officers are encouraging the public to be on their guard.
Cllr David Hall, of Somerset County Council, said: “If someone knocks on your door that you do not recognise, and you were not expecting, do not open the door unless you feel comfortable doing so. If a caller tells you your property is in need of repair, always seek other professional opinions and only agree to have work done if you are happy you can trust the trader and that you would be able to contact them easily if things go wrong.”
Some rogue traders offer services such as window and gutter cleaning, roofing work, driveway repairs and garden clearance with the aim of cheating householders.
Other criminals claim to be from the council, police, health care companies or utility and phone companies.
Doorstep crime can affect anyone – but the elderly and vulnerable people are often targeted.
People should exercise caution on their own doorstep but are urged to look out for neighbours, family and friends to help prevent them falling victim.
Suspicious activity can be reported to the police on 101 or Trading Standards on 0345 404 0506. Anyone concerned that someone is at risk of serious harm should call 999.
