DRIVER Richard Little was angry after getting soaked with petrol when he visited the BP service station opposite Court Fields School in Wellington.

Mr Little called in to fill up his father’s Nissan on Friday but the fuel pump did not cut off when the car’s tank was full.

The company director, who lives at Oaken Ground in Wellington, said: “Fuel spilled on to my trousers and shoes, which were soaked, on to the side of the car and the ground below.”

When he went to report the incident to station staff he was told it was not the first time the same thing had happened at the same pump.

He added: “I was given an accident record form to fill out but this wasn’t an accident.”

The petrol station is run by MRH and its company secretary David Hathaway said an engineer had checked the pump last Tuesday after the first problem had been reported but could not find a fault.

He added: “The pump was put out of action after Mr Little reported the incident. We can only assume it was some sort of intermittent fault that didn’t show up when the engineer was on site.

“We have the maintenance contractor back in today (Monday) and they are swapping out the nozzles on the pump concerned.”
