POLICE have called on people in Wellington to act as their ‘eyes and ears’ in the ongoing battle against drugs in the town.

PCSO Victoria Henderson said the community was the best form of ‘intelligence’ for police gathering information on illegal drug activity in the area.

She was speaking at the monthly meeting of Wellington Town Council while going through the regular police report provided to councillors.

The report includes a list of crimes officers have dealt with over the past month and these usually include criminal damage, anti-social behaviour issues, public order offences, thefts and assaults.

But Cllr Marcus Barr said: “What about the drug busts? I never see anything on these lists about early morning raids where the police have gone round to the house and kicked the door in.”

PCSO Henderson said: “We need to gather information and intelligence first and get enough on our system before we can do anything.”

She then turned to members of the public at the meeting and said: “You – the public – are our intelligence. If you hear or see something please let us know.

“We need the intelligence. If we don’t have the intelligence we need – we can’t do anything about drugs.”

Councillors were told that undercover plain-clothed officers were working in the area to try and identify drug-related issues.
