POLICE patrols are being stepped up after booze-fuelled vandals trashed flower beds and garden buildings at Wellington Park at the weekend.

Saturday's attack has prompted renewed calls for the Edwardian park, the jewel in the town's crown, to be closed at 8pm.

The attack, in which the bandstand and the shelter, known as the Threepenny Bit were targeted, comes just days before the presentation of a prestigious Green Flag environmental award.

As park maintenance men worked to put the damage right ahead of the ceremony on Friday, Iris Ellins, secretary of the Friends of Wellington Park described the vandalism as "horrendous."
