PLANS are in the pipeline for the Duke of Wellington to visit the town later this year to mark a special 200th anniversary.

Members of Wellington Town Council were informed earlier this month that Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow had sent an invitation to the Duke.

It was back on September 28, 1819, that the then 1st Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, visited the town.

That was four years after he led the famous victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Wellington in June 1815.

Despite the fact that he took his title from the town, the Iron Duke – as he was known – only visited Wellington once in his life.

Ms Pow has close links with the current Duke of Wellington, Charles Wellesley, and has asked if he would like to visit Wellington on or around the 200th anniversary of the famous

Duke’s visit in September.
