A WORKING group of town councillors could be set up next week to tackle the issue of so many empty shops and business premises in Wellington.
Cllrs Ben Shepherd and Mark Lithgow, the two newest members of the town council, will put the idea to a meeting on Monday.
The working group would be given a broad remit to consider the challenges faced by retailers and other traders in the town.
A selection of traders and other business people would also be asked to join the councillors to bring their expertise to the discussions.
Cllr Shepherd, who was elected in Wellington South in October, said: “A lot of people told me when I was campaigning for election how important a thriving town centre is to everyone who lives in Wellington.
“So, I have listened to their concerns and feel we need a thorough investigation into why local shops are empty, and if there is anything the town council can do to support our retailers and work towards filling these empty buildings.
“One of the town council’s key aspirations is to take on more responsibility ourselves for running public services provided to Wellington residents.
“We have the resources to do much more, and I am determined the working group will put forward practical steps we can take over the coming years to support new and existing retailers.”
