THIS May, the historic and imposing walls of Shepton Mallet Prison will once again echo with the sound of slamming cell doors - but this time, it is all for an incredible cause.
On Saturday, May 16, local charity Reminiscence Learning will host its immersive "Jailbreak" fundraising event, and 19 participants have already stepped forward to be "locked away" to support those living with dementia.
The event offers a unique, heart-pounding adventure where participants trade their civilian clothes for prison jumpsuits to experience a day in the life of an inmate. The 19 volunteers currently signed up will face an immersive role-playing environment led by trained prison staff, activities including an escape room challenge and team-based exercises and finally, the ultimate goal; every "prisoner" is tasked with raising a minimum bail of £250 to secure their release.
Participants can also choose a "Night Behind Bars," staying until 8am the following morning.
While the event is designed to be fun and engaging, the mission behind it is serious. All funds raised through "bail" payments go directly to Reminiscence Learning, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals with dementia and their families. The charity relies on these creative fundraising efforts to continue providing essential services and care to support families through their dementia journey.
Though 19 participants are already preparing for their "sentence," spaces are limited and registration remains open for those who want to make a difference.
Participants must be 18 or older and in good health to navigate the uneven ground and many stairs of the historic building.
As the event draws closer, the question remains: will friends, family, and colleagues step up to post bail, or will these 19 volunteers be left to the ghosts of Shepton Mallet?
