Former manager of the Midland Bank in Wellington – later HSBC – John Campkin died peacefully at Musgrove Park Hospital last Sunday (February 21) at the age of 83.

John was born and brought up in Weston-super-Mare and attended Weston Grammar School before starting his banking career with Midland at its Chepstow branch.

After serving two years National Service in Hong Kong, he returned to the Midland Bank where he met his future wife Tryphena in 1960 while he was working in his home town branch in Weston-super-Mare.

They married in 1966 and would have celebrated 55 years of married life next month.

John and Tryphena had three children, Ellen, Sarah and Christopher, and the family moved to Wellington in 1972 when John was appointed manager of the Midland’s Wellington branch. He was subsequently appointed as area manager for the bank based in Taunton, before retiring in 1990.

John became a member of Wellington Rotary Club in 1985 and remained an active member until 2017, twice serving as president. He also served at District level, during which time he led a group of young professionals on a group study exchange to India for five weeks.

He was also secretary of the Rotary Housing Association, which provided housing for the elderly at Ivy House and The Old Vicarage in Wellington – a role he found truly rewarding.

John was very much a family man and will be greatly missed by his wife, three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
