ONE OF Wellington’s green spaces has won a national award for sustainability in gardening.

Transition Town Wellington’s Fox’s Fields Forest Garden won the RHS Sustainable Gardening Award Britain in Bloom awards ceremony in Brighton on Friday, October 31.

The event was attended by Mayor Janet Lloyd and Wellington Town Council’s Open Spaces manager Darren Hill.

It follows success at the South West in Bloom awards just a few weeks prior, where the town council won ‘gold’ in the Portman Cup for the first time since 2008.

This project was up against four other groups from around the country in Scotland, London, Anglia, and Wales.

Mayor Janet Lloyd said, “It was a great honour on 31st October for Darren and I to accept the national award for the RHS Sustainable Gardening 2025 on behalf of Transition Town Wellington.

“When Foxes Field was bought by Somerset West and Taunton District Council some five years ago and handed over to Wellington Town Council who then passed on the management of this open space to Transition Town Wellington, it was just an ordinary field.”

“Over the last few years, Transition Town have worked very hard in all weathers nurturing the site, planting fruit and nut trees and fruit bushes which allow the residents of Wellington to go along and pick the fruit and take it home to cook and eat.”

Open Spaces manager Darren Hill said, “This award recognises the commitment of a group to sustainable environmental practices in horticulture and supporting the wildlife through gardening,

“I was very honoured to attend the Britain in Bloom awards in Brighton and receive the award on their behalf.

“There were four other regional winners all up for this award and the competition was very strong, they should be very proud of this achievement, and that all their hard work is recognised at a national level.”
