WELLINGTON Town Council agreed to make a grant of £650 to Wellington Wildcats girls football team at its January meeting.

Councillors heard that the team was increasing in popularity. The regular sessions had grown in numbers to such an extent that it had become necessary to split them into two separate age groups - under 14 and under 11s (new group). The money would be used to pay for the hire of a sports hall and provide additional equipmentfor the extra session.

Proposing the grant, the mayor Janet Lloyd said it was a very worthwhile cause.

Cllr Gary James said that anything "which helps young folk in the town we should support."

The town council, which has made grants to a variety of organisations during the past year, and still has £6,731 left in its grants budget of £15,000.
