MEMBERS of Wellington WI supported by Wellington & District Townswomen’s Guild have produced displays of hand-knitted poppies in the town in the run up to Remembrance commemorations.
The first was completed in Wellington Park, where the poppy displays adorned the Remembrance Garden, and linked around the chains surrounding the war memorial and wrapped around nearby trees. The ladies were then joined by children from Bouncy Bear Childcare, who each added their own hand-made poppies.
A second display was completed in Monmouth Gardens in North Street, where the knitted poppies were placed into the ground and around the shrubs, and attached to nearby railings.
The ladies then moved on to Lancer Court where the flower beds were decked in knitted poppies and knitted poppy wreaths were hung below the two archway entrances.
These displays were formerly acknowledged and recognised by the Royal British Legion Wellington branch through its chairman Ray Filler, branch members and branch standard bearer Rob Trickey.
They were joined by Wellington Mayor Cllr Gary James, Deputy Mayor Cllr Janet Lloyd and other town councillors to show all those involved their appreciation.
A Wellington WI representative said: “We are all delighted to be able to show our support to the RBL and the work it does in supporting and remembering our armed forces personnel.
“Again this year we were able to call on the support of the Townswomen’s Guild without whose help we would not have been able to have the additional display at Lancer Court.
“We would also like to thank Wellington town clerk Greg Dyke for his assistance in allowing to arrange these displays. We are looking to expand our displays even further next year.”
