A WELLINGTON pub has gained the top rating for its levels of food hygiene after an inspection by Somerset Council as part of their Scores on the Doors programme.

The Iron Duke in Wellington, in Town Hall Buildings, Fore Street, was awarded a five-star rating by the council’s inspectors.

The Scores on the Doors programme aims to highlight hygiene standards following inspections carried out by an Environmental Health Officer.

Inspections judge premises on how hygienic and well-managed the food preparation at the premises is and each business is benchmarked against the same criteria namely: hygiene, structural and confidence in management.

Pub manager at The Iron Duke, Sean Meade said: “We are delighted that we have gained the top rating and I’m sure our customers will welcome the news too. Standards of hygiene at the pub are of paramount importance.

“All of the staff work hard to ensure that the pub offers its customers the highest levels of hygiene at all time and we are delighted that our efforts have been recognised with the five-star rating.”

The pub was last rated with a Very Good hygiene rating in 2024.

Patrons can evaluate the scores for different establishments before they attend them via the Scores on the Doors website. It hosts the hygiene ratings on pubs, clubs, cafes, take-aways, deliveries and restaurants from around the country with 614,517 food establishments listed in the UK.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) estimates 2.4 million cases of food-borne illness occurs every year in the UK. This is up from the 2009 estimate of approximately one million.

Scores on the Doors worked with the Food Standards Agency to standardise the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in 2011, which helps the public decide where to eat out, or buy food.
