Hollywood stars have enjoyed a day of music, song, quizzes and fun thanks to the Young at Heart Club.
The club hosted a movie-themed event as part of an annual day to celebrate the organisation and bring members from its Tuesday Uplowman group together with the Monday and Friday Burlescombe group.
Club co-founder Lloyd Yorke said: “This year our theme was fancy dress based on movies, that way it gives people a chance to think outside of the box, be creative and do things they would not normally do.
“We were overwhelmed by the people here and their efforts. It’s always a risk when you do these sort of things as to how many will take up the opportunity – some are a little shy but the majority have taken part.
“You can see the amount of work, time and effort – some have called into charity shops to buy stuff specifically, and then those people who have been unable to buy costumes are our extras for the day.”
Lloyd and Diana Yorke launched the Young at Heart Club as a not-for-profit group in 2014. They have more than 19 years combined experience and have the skills and imagination to ensure older people have a fun-filled day.
The club aims to tackle loneliness and isolation by providing a group for the over-60s to have fun, socialise and feel part of the community. This is an opportunity to get out of the house, make new friends and enjoy the activities. The club started with a small group of five members and now attracts more than 50 attendances a week. But now some groups have reached capacity and there is a waiting list.
Mr Yorke added: “We’re full on Fridays now and have a waiting list. We have a maximum of 20 as we do not have enough volunteers, so we desperately need help.
“Anyone who wants to get involved and help those elderly people in the rural community who may be isolated will find it very rewarding. They may even pick up new skills and will become part of our community.
“Volunteers come along here, they take part in activities, so in a way, they leave just as happy who come and use our service.”
