SHOPPERS and visitors to Wellington and Wiveliscombe town centres can now enjoy unlimited WiFi free of charge.

Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) has been working with IT services provider Pinacl to get the towns – and Taunton – connected digitally.

Anyone will be able to use the WIFi via their social media accounts to keep them informed of events and activities, and businesses will be able to market their services.

Cllr Mark Edwards, council executive member for business development at TDBC, said: “I am delighted that open public WiFi is now live. It will undoubtedly add to the attractiveness of the three towns for businesses, visitors and residents.

“Open public WiFi is a worthwhile investment that means Taunton, Wellington and Wiveliscombe will be joining the growing list of smart places in Britain. This will be of great benefit to shoppers, visitors and traders alike.”

Pinacl strategic director Mark Lowe said: “We know that free and easy to use WiFi is widely being acknowledged as a key enabler for smart places and have no doubt that this service will greatly support council initiatives while enhancing the provision of services for visitors and residents alike.”

TDBC has been working with Friendly Wi Fi to ensure the system is safe for users.

Beverley Smith, of Friendly WiFi, said: “The Friendly Wifi symbol is designed to help children, young people and adults navigate their way through the high street and when they are making choices on days out and holidays, giving the option to use a Friendly WiFi-approved service to ensure that the public WiFi they are accessing is filtered and safe.”

The council’s marketing team is overseeing the Wellington and Wiveliscombe pages. They are being helped in Wellington by the town council and Keith Wheatley of Wellington Business Association.

In Wiveliscombe the library and the recreation ground have enabled access to their sites, and the town council and the 10 Parishes Business Group have helped provide content for the pages.
