BUDDING beekeepers can find out more about the hobby at a taster session at Heatherton Park, near Bradford-on-Tone, next month.

Taunton Beekeepers are offering the chance to find out about honeybees and see inside a hive.

Event co-ordinator Julie Husband said: “We will be giving visitors an overview of what’s involved in keeping bees. They will have the chance to see inside a hive and experience the fascinating world of the honey bee first hand.”

Visitors will be given a talk at the teaching centre at Heatherton Park and afterwards, weather permitting, will be invited to kit up in bee suits to observe honeybees in the apiary.

Jonah Jones from Nynehead attended a previous taster day and is on this year’s beginners’ course. She said: “Attending the event was like opening a door to something which had interested me for more than 25 years.”

Julie added: “Beekeeping is a fascinating subject to study whether you’re thinking of keeping bees or just interested in observing nature and understanding how bees make honey. This is an ideal way to see if you would like to find out more before committing to a beginner’s course in the new year.”

The session is on Saturday, September 8, at 2.30pm. Protective clothing will be provided but participants must bring wellington boots.
