THE eighth ‘Welly Boot’ was opened by Mayor of Wellington Cllr Bob Bowrah on Saturday (Sept 10) on the playing fields at Court Fields School, Wellington, and was followed by a display by Wellington Majorettes.
In addition to the adult and under-tens welly throwing events, WAG hosted a dog show and Carol Winter organised a dog agility event.
Wellington Silver Band started the live music with their junior band and were followed by a selection of music organised by Lee Edmead.
Entertainment was on offer for everyone: Wellington Bouncy Castles, children’s entertainers Ta’Daa!, face painting, The Vintage bar, barbecue and hog roast and refreshments, plus a variety stands, a raffle – which raised £186.50 for The Friends of Wellington Park – and a lucky flyer for a goodie bag given by Swallowfield PLC.
Several large companies and organisations supported the event by helping the organisers buy banners for advertising, and local shops sponsored trophies and medals.
Once again the longest throw male and female contestants were asked to throw off against Welbury. This year Wellington were the winners!
The money raised from entry fees, lucky flyer and tombola all goes towards next year’s event – Saturday, September 9, same time, same place!
Event organiser Sue White said: “I have had brilliant feedback from everyone, mostly commenting on a fantastic atmosphere. We had a great day – the weather wasn’t great at the start but by the end the sun was shining, the crowds were plentiful and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.
“No throwing records were broken this year, although we had a record number of entries and George Street Massive won the team event for the fifth year running.
“I would like to thank the committee, the organisations who joined us this year, the competitors, visitors and all the volunteers for helping us make this another successful event. We look forward to seeing you all on September 9, 2017!”
