Following climate emergency declarations in 2019, a joint Somerset strategy and action plans are now being put in place by Somerset councils.
This is good news and it’s essential that effective action is taken, although I would have liked to see earlier progress.
Reducing our carbon emissions to zero will require: energy and materials to be used efficiently; power coming from renewable sources; high levels of insulation in our homes and zero carbon heating; getting around more by walking, cycling and public transport; using our cars less and switching to electric; giving thought to healthier diets with less beef, lamb and diary; and restoring nature, especially forests and peatland.
Lots of good jobs can be created by a green recovery from Covid-19 and we can lead good fulfilling lives, without destroying the balance of the natural world on which we depend.
Climate strategies and actions plans will be important to help lead the way and help to enable the changes needed. We also need our government to provide support and establish the right economic and policy framework.
Unfortunately, the joint Somerset climate strategy lacks urgency and is weak on leadership and showing what needs to be done. To show how this can be improved, Somerset Green Party councillors have prepared a Green Climate Strategy for Somerset, which can be viewed on my website at www.wiveygp.org.
