I PLAYED in the same side as Mick Gough and I would rate him the best player to have put on a Wellington shirt.

Although more than useful on the ground he was also a brilliant header of the ball.

I’ve not played with anyone better. I met him when I was back in Wellington a few years back and I know he was not too well in the past couple of years.

Even so it was a shock to hear he had died.

Great ‘Goughy’ knock

I WAS so sorry to hear about the death of Mick Gough, who was a great local sportsman.

My fondest memory of him was when I was playing cricket for Bell Green at Fitzhead. I opened the batting and we lost wickets quickly. Mick turned up late and we were nine wickets down when he came in to join me with the score on about 30.

Mick simply smashed the ball around to all parts of the field and he finished in the 90s not out while I was 83 not out.

It was a day to remember. RIP Mick.
