PEOPLE in Wiveliscombe could have to pay £20 on top of their council tax to keep their local library open, or see it close, a victim of swinging council cuts.

That was the stark choice faced by more than 200 people who squeezed into the Community Rooms in Wiveliscombe on Friday to protest about Somerset County Council's proposal to stop funding the town's library – which opened 18 months ago, and is one of 20 of 34 across the county facing closure.

Now, a 'Campaign against the Cuts' has been launched, with all those present asked to sign a petition against the move, and a working party is to be set up to explore other options in a bid to keep the service running.
