NEXT year will bring many anniversaries, not least that of the end of the First World War 100 years ago.

Something which happened in Somerset at about the same time was the formation of a Public Library service. One wonders what the founding fathers would have made of today’s service with its offerings of books, ebooks, DVDs, computer service, links to a vast area of the South-West and so on.

Various events will be happening over the year but the county is starting the year by remembering those who make it work on a day-to-day level, the staff. Forms are available in Wellington and Wiveliscombe libraries for the public to nominate staff for an award. Details are also on the County website, under the link to ‘library awards’.

Meanwhile, at a talk in Wellington library – which has had several homes in the past 100 years – a fascinated audience found out what goes on backstage to bring audiences the wonders of theatre and operatic performances.

Given by Mandy Burnett, props supervisor at Opera North, and organised by the Library Friends Group, the talk covered the buying, making and modification of items used on stage. Perhaps most surprising was the detail of props some directors demand – and what they are prepared to pay to get them.

Wellington and Wiveliscombe officially has a new library supervisor in Alice Noakes – she has been acting supervisor since last December. Alice, who admits to a fondness for Lego, has a degree in English and is currently studying for a Masters degree.
