A COUPLE who left behind their high-pressure careers to travel fulltime in a motorhome have marked ten years on the road.
Karen and Myles Davies, who previously lived in Milverton after nearly two decades on the Isle of Man, made the life-changing decision in 2016 following years of high-pressure work.
The couple ran multiple businesses, a guest house and more — which Karen described as ‘a lot of pressure’.
She said: “We were constantly working long hours. It got to a point where we just could not continue living like that.”

They moved to Somerset in 2012 seeking a slower pace of life. But it was a six-week trip to New Zealand in 2015 that truly changed everything.
Travelling in a hired motorhome, Karen discovered a love for a more transient lifestyle.
“I thought I needed the security of a house, but I realised I didn’t, we had our home with us, just on wheels.”
Shortly after returning, Miles suggested taking a year out to travel Europe, and Karen agreed.
They left the UK in March 2016, crossing into Spain, and never looked back.
Their journey was first captured just before their Europe trip when the Wellington Weekly interviewed the couple — at a time when their plans were more short term.
Since then, they have travelled extensively, from Norway in the north to Morocco in the south, and from Portugal to Estonia.
Over the past ten years the couple have wracked up a total of 107,000 miles in their motorhome.
While early trips were carefully planned, Karen says they now embrace a more spontaneous approach.
“Day to day, we follow our instincts,” she said. “We might plan loosely, but often we’ll arrive somewhere for one night and stay for three.”
The couple are currently in Morocco living amongst the Amazighs indigenous people.
They plan on next visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and eventually the Philippines.
Despite the idyllic image of life on the road, Karen is quick to dispel the myth that it is always glamorous.
“It’s not all Instagram-perfect, there are breakdowns, bad weather, and moments where things go wrong. It’s not ‘candy floss and unicorns’, it’s real life.”

Financially, the couple sustain their lifestyle through a mix of rental income, investments and writing.
But Karen says the biggest surprise has been how much cheaper their life has become.
“In places like Morocco, we can spend about £7 a day on a campsite. It is different to a conventional life, we are probably spending 50 per cent less than we could in the UK.”
Now marking 10 years on the road, Karen hopes their story inspires others to rethink what makes them happy.
“It is not about how far you go, it is about what you learn along the way,” she added. “Life isn’t something to escape from, it’s something to enjoy and you can choose how you live it. I feel more confident in my skin and am grateful that I have the opportunity to join in with different cultures across the globe.”
