WELLINGTON Majorettes have been congratulated on their fundraising efforts – rather than going cap in hand to the town council asking for the whole amount for their trailer project.

The majorettes had asked Wellington Town Council for a £1,000 grant which would go towards the £7,050 total cost of buying and fitting out a trailer to transport instruments and kit to and from events.

Cllr Marcus Barr was impressed by their attitude and said he was ‘sick and tired’ of other groups coming to the town council asking for the full amount.

“But this group is amazing,” he said. “They are only asking for £1,000 and they are fundraising the rest.”

Councillors heard last week that the group had already successfully bid for £2,200 from the Co-op Community Fund towards the trailer and was also actively fundraising.

Councillors voted in agreement to support the majorettes with the requested £1,000 grant.

Cllr Andrew Govier said: “They do a lot of good work in the town and they promote the town way beyond the town’s boundaries at carnivals.

“They offer constructive opportunities for young people in the town.”

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mark Lithgow, also spoke of his support for the majorettes.
