A FORMER town resident is looking to reunite a found memorial plaque with its family having discovered it buried in the grounds of Wellington Park.

Barry Lamb, 68, who now lives in Ham, Chelston, said he visits the town almost every day and the town park similarly often.

On a recent visit, sitting on the grass, Mr Lamb said he felt something sharp poking him and discovered a small plaque, “jet black” when he’d found it, stuck vertically in the ground.

Believed to be brass, the plaque was then cleaned up and found to have an inscription which now clearly reads: ‘This Seat Was Donated In Memory Of MILLIE HEAL, 1917 – 2003, A Kind And Gentle Lady’, inscribed beside a dove carrying an olive branch.

Mr Lamb said: “It was too heavy to be regular metals so I thought it might be brass. I gave it a polish and found it to be a plaque.

“I thought it would be nice to try and return it to the family.

“I know if anyone found the plaque commemorating my wife, I’d want someone to try and return it to me.”

The plaque appears to have been attached to a bench, but, Mr Lamb said, there wasn’t anyone he could find to tell him anything about it.

“No one knows anything of it,” he said.

Having searched around Wellington Park for any benches that might be missing plaques, none could be found, said the 68-year-old, nor was there anyone in the park who could help him solve the mystery.

After an attempt to find family of friends of Ms Heal online, Mr Lamb said he’s had no success, but is now hoping word of mouth will reunite the plaque with its rightful owner.
