THE MAYOR of Taunton Deane, Cllr Bob Bowrah, has spoken of his shock and sadness following the deaths of eight young soldiers who were on active service in Afghanistan.

Wellington councilor Bob, an ex-Serviceman, said: "It is tragic that so many young lives have been lost. I am sure that I speak on behalf of the people of Taunton Deane when I say that our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of those who have lost their lives."

Five of the eight servicemen were serving with The Rifles. Taunton Deane maintains strong links with the Regiment which has the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of its historical ties with the district.

Taunton Deane Borough Council is flying the Union flag at half-mast outside its headquarters, The Deane House in Taunton, today, Tuesday in tribute as the fallen soldiers were repatriated at RAF Lyneham.
