A CHILD kept alive for weeks by fantastic doctors and nurses after being born weighing only 1lb 2oz is set to go to primary school next week.
“It is a day we never thought would come,” said mum Shannon Baker, 24, whose daughter Miya was born 14 weeks prematurely at Southmead Hospital in Bristol in August, 2014.
Shannon and partner Luke Woodgate, 32, who live at Oaken Ground, Rockwell Green, spent seven weeks at the hospital by Miya’s side day and night.
Miya was moved to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, where she was kept for another nine weeks before being allowed home.
“She is fine now,” added Shannon, a hairdresser. “There are one or two issues and she is monitored regularly at Musgrove.
“She has been at pre-school for two years and loves it. And she is so excited about going to Rockwell Green School. It is just around the corner and she cannot wait.”
Since those dramatic events in 2014, when doctors and nurses fought to keep her alive, the couple and their relatives and friends have raised more than £8,000 for Southmead and Musgrove.
“We have come a long way since those days at Southmead.” said Shannon. “Miya going to school is a dream come true.
“It is going to be very special for us. The support we have had has been amazing.”
