HISTORIC England, which champions and protects historic places, has added Wellington Monument to its ‘at risk’ register.
The body added the Grade II* listed monument to its Heritage at Risk Register for the South-West following a fall of masonry which resulted in its closure for health and safety reasons. Historic England has provided advice on extensive investigations to conserve the monument and devise a strategy for its repair.
The Heritage at Risk Register for the South-West gives an annual snapshot of the condition of some of the region’s most important historic buildings, sites, monuments and places.
Across the region, 91 sites have been removed from the register because their futures have been secured, while 71 sites have been added to the register because of concerns about their condition. Over the past year, Historic England has offered £1.76 million in grants to help 69 of the region’s best loved and most important historic sites.
